A young mother, her older boyfriend, and her son travel on a cross-country to do a drop-off that will change Linda's life, and even more profoundly her son's life.

2. The Great All-Dominican Championship Playoff Game by Robin Rice -
3 M (2 are Hispanic (30s - 40s) and 1 African American (30s) Based on the true story of a Dominican Republic Dictator who paid Satchel Paige, a talented member of the American Negro Baseball League to play for the Dominican Republic under very uncomfortable circumstances.

3. Scenario by Ed Vela -
1 M no particular age, 3W (1 middle aged, 1 teen, 1 girl)
Actor's try to follow a writer's constant changes in the script. Much physical action.

4. A Desert Serenade by John Yarborough -
2M (30's - 60's) 2 W (30's - 60"s)
When a couple who have been together many years can't agree on whether they once went to the ancient city of Petra, a comic argument takes a dark turn.

5. Dinner with Marvin by Donna Spector -
2 M (30's - 50's), 2 W (30's - 40's)
On the last night of their San Francisco vacation Lucy expects Marvin to ask her to marry him, but Marvin, an architect, tells her they have "structural differences" and their affair is finished. Jacques, a French waiter, sympathizes with Lucy, who is further devastated by the arrival of Marilyn, Marvin's wife, who reveals startling facts abut her marriage.

Shakespeare Repertory theater comes to Pearland! We are hoping to cast an ensemble to be in two plays Romeo and Juliet and A Winters Tale. We will rehearse plays on alternate days. We are looking for a diverse cast of various ages. Shakespeare experience not necessary. Need to be hard working, dedicated to learning and growing as a Shakespeare actor, and a team player! Please be familiar with the play. Sides will be available at the theater.

Romeo (teen)- The son and heir of Montague and Lady Montague. A young man of about sixteen, Romeo is handsome, intelligent, and sensitive. Though impulsive and immature, his idealism and passion make him an extremely likable character. He lives in the middle of a violent feud between his family and the Capulets, but he is not at all interested in violence. His only interest is love.
Juliet (12-18)- The daughter of Capulet and Lady Capulet. A beautiful thirteen-year-old girl, Juliet begins the play as a naïve child who has thought little about love and marriage, but she grows up quickly upon falling in love with Romeo.
Friar Lawrence (20's-50's) - A Franciscan friar, friend to both Romeo and Juliet. Kind, civic-minded, a proponent of moderation, and always ready with a plan. As well as being a Catholic holy man, Friar Lawrence is also an expert in the use of seemingly mystical potions and herbs.
Mercutio (Teen-20's) - A kinsman to the Prince, and Romeo’s close friend, Mercutio overflows with imagination, wit, and, at times, a strange, biting satire. He can be quite hotheaded, and hates people who are affected, pretentious, or obsessed with the latest fashions.
The Nurse (30's-40's)- Juliet’s nurse, the woman who breast-fed Juliet when she was a baby and has cared for Juliet her entire life. A vulgar, long-winded, and sentimental character, the Nurse provides comic relief with her frequently inappropriate remarks and speeches. She provides a contrast with Juliet, given that her view of love is earthy and sexual, whereas Juliet is idealistic and intense.
Tybalt - (Teens) A Capulet, Juliet’s cousin. Vain, fashionable, supremely aware of courtesy and the lack of it, he becomes aggressive, violent, and quick to draw his sword when he feels his pride has been injured.
Capulet - (30's-40's) The patriarch of the Capulet family, father of Juliet, husband of Lady Capulet, and enemy of Montague. He truly loves his daughter, though he is not well acquainted with Juliet’s thoughts or feelings. Often prudent, he commands respect and propriety, but he is liable to fly into a rage when either is lacking.
Lady Capulet - (Twenties-early 30's) Juliet’s mother, Capulet’s wife. A woman who herself married young , she is eager to see her daughter marry Paris. She is an ineffectual mother, relying on the Nurse for moral and pragmatic support.
Montague (30's-40's) - Romeo’s father, the patriarch of the Montague clan and bitter enemy of Capulet.
Lady Montague -(30's-40's) Romeo’s mother, Montague’s wife. She dies of grief after Romeo is exiled from Verona.
Paris - (Teens-20's) A kinsman of the Prince, and the suitor of Juliet most preferred by Capulet.
Benvolio - (Teens-20's) Montague’s nephew, Romeo’s cousin and thoughtful friend, he makes a genuine effort to defuse violent scenes in public places.
Prince Escalus -(30's) The Prince of Verona As the seat of political power in Verona, he is concerned about maintaining the public peace at all costs. Doubles with Chorus.
Friar John - (Any age) A Franciscan friar charged by Friar Lawrence with taking the news of Juliet’s false death to Romeo in Mantua.
Balthasar -(Teen) Romeo’s dedicated servant, who brings Romeo the news of Juliet’s death, unaware that her death is a ruse.
Sampson & Gregory - (Teen) Two servants of the house of Capulet, who, like their master, hate the Montagues.
Abram -Teen) Montague’s servant, who fights with Sampson and Gregory in the first scene of the play.
The Apothecary (Any age)- An apothecary in Mantua.
Peter - (teen) A Capulet servant who invites guests to Capulet’s feast and escorts the Nurse to meet with Romeo. He is illiterate, and a bad singer.

Leontes - (30's-50's) The King of Sicilia, and the childhood friend of the Bohemian King Polixenes. He is gripped by jealous fantasies, which convince him that Polixenes has been having an affair with his wife, Hermione; his jealousy leads to the destruction of his family.
Hermione - (20's-50's) The virtuous and beautiful Queen of Sicilia. Falsely accused of infidelity by her husband, Leontes, she apparently dies of grief just after being vindicated by the Oracle of Delphi, but is restored to life at the play's close.
Perdita - (late teen-20's)The daughter of Leontes and Hermione. Because her father believes her to be illegitimate, she is abandoned as a baby on the coast of Bohemia, and brought up by a Shepherd. Unaware of her royal lineage, she falls in love with the Bohemian Prince Florizel.
Polixenes - (30's-50's) The King of Bohemia, and Leontes's boyhood friend. He is falsely accused of having an affair with Leontes's wife, and barely escapes Sicilia with his life. Much later in life, he sees his only son fall in love with a lowly Shepherd's daughter—who is, in fact, a Sicilian princess.
Florizel -(late teen-20's) Polixenes's only son and heir; he falls in love with Perdita, unaware of her royal ancestry, and defies his father by eloping with her.
Camillo - (20's-50's) An honest Sicilian nobleman, he refuses to follow Leontes's order to poison Polixenes, deciding instead to flee Sicily and enter the Bohemian King's service.
Paulina - (40's 60's) A noblewoman of Sicily, she is fierce in her defense of Hermione's virtue, and unrelenting in her condemnation of Leontes after Hermione's death. She is also the agent of the (apparently) dead Queen's resurrection.
Autolycus - (Late teens and up) A roguish peddler, vagabond, and pickpocket; he steals the Clown's purse and does a great deal of pilfering at the Shepherd's sheepshearing, but ends by assisting in Perdita and Florizel's escape.
Shepherd (60's and up)- An old and honorable sheep-tender, he finds Perdita as a baby and raises her as his own daughter.
Antigonus - (40s and up) Paulina's husband, and also a loyal defender of Hermione. He is given the unfortunate task of abandoning the baby Perdita on the Bohemian coast.
Clown - (Teens to late 20's)The Shepherd's buffoonish son, and Perdita's adopted brother.
Mamillius - (8-11) Boy or girl may be cast. The young prince of Sicilia, Leontes and Hermione's son. He dies, perhaps of grief, after his father wrongly imprisons his mother.
Cleomenes - (Any age) A lord of Sicilia, sent to Delphi to ask the Oracle about Hermione's guilt.
Dion - (Any age) A Sicilian lord, he accompanies Cleomenes to Delphi.
Emilia - (Any age) One of Hermione's ladies-in-waiting.
Archidamus - (Any age) A lord of Bohemia.

Weekend Performances: Aug. 5th through Sept. 3rd

The Great Yukon Blizzard of 1888 sets the scene for this hilarious romp over the fields of melodramatics. Included in the cast are: the fair and lovely maiden; the poor, crusty, but honest freelance lumberjack; the stalwart and heroic Mountie—and a villain you will simply love to loathe! Add to their ranks a snow-blinded Indian, a flapjack-filching bruin and one befuddled lass who keeps forgetting her identity (not to mention her sex!), and you have a madcap farce in the finest and funniest tradition of the melodrama. Will Fangduster T. Barrelbottom get away with his unmentionably nefarious scheme? Can our true-blue hero ever hope to clear his foully besmirched name? Is there a chance that the heroine may escape the sawmill blade?

Closing out the Main Stage this season, Unity Theatre brings you the comedic farce, "Scapino!". This hysterical adaptation of Moliere's comic tale of Les Fourberies de Scapin, (literally Scapin’s Deceits) takes place in Naples, Italy. The lead character, Scapino, is a rapscallion who devises a complex plot to help two pairs of lovers against parental opposition that, it turns out, does not exist. Scapino is a mischievous, fast-talking, quick-thinking rascal, who cleverly manipulates and cajoles everyone into doing exactly what he intends them to do. Although Scapino is not a musical, it is punctuated with songs, for example an Italian menu is sung to a snappy tune in the opening scene!

George Brock returns to Unity Theatre to direct this fun-filled frolic, with his usual zest and fervor. George has directed many shows at Unity, including "Deathtrap", "The Odd Couple", "A Tuna Christmas", and "I Hate Hamlet", among others. George says, “I first saw this show back in the dark ages when I was in high school. My dear friend Brad Waters was playing Sylvestro. I was mesmerized from the first moment and when Scapino hit the stage the only thing I thought from that point on was ‘I must play that role one day!’ and thanks to chance and the good will of director Brandon Smith, I got to back at Actors Theatre of Houston in the ’90’s. Farce is difficult and here’s why: On the surface it seems like all big faces, loud talking and lots of physical silliness and for the most part that’s the outcome of the work the actors have to do…but if all of that isn’t firmly grounded in real, human choices resulting in extreme emotional responses it doesn’t work…it isn’t funny. When John Cleese slams his head on the desk in Fawlty Towers we laugh like loons not because he’s slamming his head on a desk but because he has reached a point of frustration we have all reached at some point and we see the honesty of what he is doing. It’s a play about beating an old man tied in a sack with a sausage…I mean how fun is that???”.

The cast and crew of "Scapino!" is a mixture of beloved local talent as well as some familiar, returning professionals from Houston and the surrounding areas. James Monaghan, who directed our most recent Studio production, "Jerry Finnegan’s Sister", and performed as Danny Fleming in "First Night", brings the rapscallion Scapino to life. Remember Kris Kringle (aka Santa Claus) from "Miracle on 34th Street"? That’s Ralph Ehntholt, and he’ll be joining the cast as Geronte. It’s a large cast, so you’ll also enjoy seeing Cris Skelton, Christine Saenz, Cydney Pennison, Devin Norwood, Jennifer Malisheski, Jim Salners, Jordan Gaskamp, Leslie Wood, Malik Cole, Christina Kelly, Tam Treviño, Wyntner Wood, and Zachary Leonard.

Scapino! runs for three weekends at Unity Theatre, previewing on Thursday, June 2nd, opening on Friday, June 3rd, and playing through Sunday, June 19th. Performances are Thursdays at 7:30 pm, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm, and Sundays at 4:00 pm. Tickets are $27 and they are reserved, however $17 tickets are available for Preview, June 2nd, student tickets are always $15, and all unsold seats are $15 at 15 minutes prior to any performance. A talk-back with the cast and crew immediately follows the Preview performance on June 2nd and a Director’s Chat is scheduled for 7:30 pm on Saturday, June 11th, prior to the show. We are gearing up for this summer's production of the classic John Steinbeck novel directed by Rebecca Bernstein and produced by Louis William Provenzano! We need a huge cast! This is going to be a major ensemble show, so everyone who is cast as a non-Joad character will most likely be playing more than one role. Auditions open to ALL ETHNICITIES!

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.

Roles available:

Tom Joad:
Protagonist of the story; the Joad family's second son, named after his father. Later on, Tom takes leadership of the family even though he is young.

Ma Joad:
Matriarch. Practical and warm-spirited, she tries to hold the family together. Her given name is never learned; it is suggested that her maiden name was Hazlett.

Pa Joad:
Patriarch, also named Tom, age 50. Hardworking sharecropper and family man. Pa becomes a broken man upon losing his livelihood and means of supporting his family, forcing Ma to assume leadership.

Uncle John Joad:
Pa Joad's older brother (Tom describes him as "a fella about 60", but in narrative he is described as 50). He felt guilty about the death of his young wife years before, and has been prone to binges involving alcohol and prostitutes, but is generous with his goods.

Al Joad:
The second youngest son, a "smart-aleck sixteen-year-older" who cares mainly for cars and girls; he looks up to Tom, but begins to find his own way.

Rose of Sharon Joad Rivers (prefebly willing to have one breast shown in show):
Childish and dreamy teenage daughter (18) who develops into a mature woman. She symbolizes regrowth when she helps the starving stranger (see also Roman Charity, works of art based on the legend of a daughter as wet nurse to her dying father). Pregnant in the beginning of the novel, she delivers a stillborn baby, perhaps due to malnutrition.

Connie Rivers:
Rose of Sharon's husband. Nineteen years old and naïve, he is overwhelmed by marriage and impending fatherhood; he abandons his wife shortly after they arrive in California.

Noah Joad:
The oldest son, he is the first to leave the family, planning to live off fishing on the Colorado River. Injured at birth and described as "strange", he may have slight learning difficulties.

Grampa Joad:
Tom's grandfather, who expresses his strong desire to stay in Oklahoma. His full name is given as William James Joad. Grampa is drugged by his family with "soothin' syrup" to force him to leave, but he dies the first evening on the road. Casy attributes his death to a stroke but says that Grampa is "jus' stayin' with the lan'. He couldn' leave it."

Ruthie Joad:
The youngest daughter, age twelve. She is shown to be reckless and childish. Quarreling with another child, she reveals Tom in hiding.

Winfield Joad:
The youngest male in the family, age ten, "kid-wild and calfish".

Jim Rawley:
Manages the camp at Weedpatch, he shows the Joads surprising favor.

Mr. Wainwright:
The father of Aggie Wainwright and husband of Mrs. Wainwright. Worries over his daughter Aggie.

Mrs. Wainwright:
Mother to Aggie Wainwright and wife to Mr. Wainwright. She helps Ma deliver Rose of Sharon's baby.

Aggie Wainwright:
Sixteen-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wainwright. Intends to marry Al.

Floyd Knowles:
The man at the Hooverville who urges Tom and Casy to join labor organizations. His agitation results in Casy's being jailed.

Doña Bárbara

Talento Bilingue de Houston

Talento Bilingüe de Houston and Grupo de Teatro Indigo, proudly present: Doña Bárbara, a story based on the novel by Venezuelan author Rómulo Gallegos, and adapted to the theater by Eddie Gonzalez.

Doña Bárbara is a wealthy landowner hardened by an experience she had as a teenager: she was raped by the same men who killed her first love. She grew vicious, and has accumulated her vast lands and cattle herds by using men, as well as illegal means, such as bribery of local officials.

One of the few remaining landowners in the area is Santos Luzardo, who has returned from abroad to take control of his family's ranch. He suspects his foreman, Don Balbino, had been working for Doña Bárbara in stealing his cattle.
Santos will restore balance and bring peace to the citizens of San Fernando.
