Press Release
September 5, 2011

Theatre New West presents a staged reading of “The Guys.”
The performance will be a Memorial/Remembrance for the 10th Anniversary of 9/11. It will also be a Benefit for the Houston Fire Protection Fund.

Of the original production the “New York Times” said: “The Guys” is a timeless drama about the surprising truths people can discover in ordinary lives, and the connections we make with others and ourselves in time of tragedy. Paralyzed by grief and unable to put his thoughts into words, Nick, a fire

captain, seeks out the help of a
writer to compose eulogies for the colleagues and friends he lost in the catastrophic events of September 11, 2001. As Joan, an editor by trade, draws Nick out about “the guys”, powerful profiles emerge, revealing vivid personalities and the seemingly unremarkable people.”

The original off-Broadway production opened in December, 2001 with Sigourney Weaver and Bill Murray. Six months later it continued to play to full houses. The list of prominent actors who played the roles include Anthony LaPaglia, Susan Sarandon, Bill Irwin, Tim Robbins, Swoosie Kurtz, Amy Irving, and Tom Wopat. Ms. Weaver and Mr. Wopat will reprise their roles in New York for the `10th Anniversary, on 9/11, and as a benefit for Firefighters families.

In the Theatre New West production, the writer will be played by Claire Hart-Palumbo, one of Houston’s finest actors, the fire chief by Luke Wrobel, who is currently wowing audiences at the new Music Box Theatre.

The performance will be staged on September 11 (Sunday), at Stages Repertory Theatre, with an early evening curtain of 6:00PM.
This is not a Stages production, but is being produced and directed by Joe Watts, Artistic Director of Theatre New West. Stages Producing Artistic Director, Kenn McLaughin, has graciously offered one of their theatres for this important event.
