April 1, 2006

Theatre Southwest is having its first: "Only a Fiver" Fundraiser. The night will include concert readings of ORIGINAL 10 to 15 Minute works...

The target date for this event is Saturday, April 1st (April Fool's Day, but this notice is NO JOKE), matinee or evening yet to be determined.

What is needed right now are scripts that might work well in a Readers Theatre Format (ala "Love Letters") to be sent in for consideration.

Because this is a FUNDraiser, a $5 entry fee is asked of all who wish to send in a script. $5 for the first play, and $5 for additional plays (by the same playwright), up to FOUR. And, PLEASE, no scripts that have already been produced for a paying audience.

But, wait there's MORE, and what will be of SPECIAL interest to all you playwrights out there: As an added incentive, of the plays picked to be read, ONE will receive a $100 cash prize to be determined by audience vote!

TSW really needs the MULAH, so anyone interested in this pre-cursor to the TSW-FOO (the 20 minute play contest, that deadlines that same night 4/1/2006-deadline has been extended from 3/15),
call Mimi Holloway at 832-251-8059 for more info on attending, or send in your script to:

There will be between 6 to 11 scripts selected for the fundraiser (depending on the length of plays selected), so this should make for an eclectic evening of quality readings, if YOU lend a hand send in some great scripts for consideration!

PLUS Battle of the Playwrights...

Local playwright Jim Bain, known for his absurdist comedies has challeged the Incredible, Edible One: Ed Vela, to a DUEL (so to speak).

At April's TSW General Meeting both wrights will be presenting workshops of new works of theirs.

Play workshops director Melrose Fougere has agreed to make it a challenge, as instead of just two presentations of two very different plays, it will be a contest to see who can deliver the BEST workshop of a play for that evening!

Bain will be showing off his latest 15 minute comedy, Vela a 10 minute drama (under the Bayou Bard's direction naturally, as he and only HE can direct HIS work best).

Bain has already begun trash talking, claiming: "Vela's writing proves that you don't have to be talented to get your work performed places." And, "I think he bribes his way into these National Contests."

While Vela countered by saying: "Bain is to playwriting what the sun is to an ice sulpture."

The winner will be decided by acclaimation by those there, so if YOU want to be there, come to the Theatre Southwest General Meeting on Wednesday, April 19th at 8pm to see the: "Battle of the Playwrights: Bain vs. Vela"
