CLASSICAL THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS FIRST INSTALLMENT OF DOUGLAS EARLE JOHNSTON PUBLIC READING SERIES

The Greeks -Back by Popular Demand: Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus

Houston, TX –After last season's successful production of Antigone, the Classical Theatre Company (CTC) kicks off their third public reading series with another Greek classic- Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus. This tale of lustful gods, fair maidens, and lowly tricksters will be performed as a staged reading on Thursday, November 12th at 7:00 P.M. at the Brazos Bookstore. The reading is free and open to the public.
Prometheus Bound, translated by David Grene and adapted for the Classical Theatre Company by John Johnston, is set to have an exceptionally talented cast led by Thomas Prior playing the title role. Mr. Prior is a recent addition to the CTC's Resident Acting Company. He previously appeared in both the Classical Theatre Company's adaptation of The Merchant of Venice as Shylock as well as in the company's spring production of Antigone as Teiresias.

Thomas Prior headlines a list of popular local actors including Philip Lehl, Rutherford Cravens and David Wald. Proudly joining the CTC for the first time are actors Larissa Bradley, Abby Debolt, and Jovan Jackson. "We have assembled a very strong cast tasked with bringing this ancient text to life," says director John Johnston

The tragedy of Prometheus Bound is based on the myth of Prometheus, a Titan who was punished by the god Zeus for giving fire to mankind. Prometheus is chained to a rock throughout the course of the play- presenting some challenging and innovative staging. "It presents a unique dynamic when the protagonist is unable to move," states Johnston.

The Classical Theatre Company, which is dedicated to being the preeminent producer of classical theatre in the nation, presenting the classical canon on the stage, in the community, and in the classroom in an engaging, visceral, and visually spectacular way, endeavors in their reading series to produce lesser known plays. "This play is a treasure because it is almost never produced," says Johnston, "We see the reading series as an opportunity to expose our audiences to the many hidden gems that lie in the classical cannon."

Also in this seasons reading series will be The Second Shepherd's Play in December and the annual day-before-Valentines Day love play Clizia by Niccolo Machiavelli.

The reading takes place at Brazos Bookstore where there will be a pre and post reading reception with wine and finger foods. Brazos Bookstore is an independent bookseller nationally renowned for its author events and locally cherished for its careful, intelligent book selection. Located at 2421 Bissonnet near Rice University, the store maintains an extensive inventory of literary fiction, non-fiction, biography, history, poetry, literary criticism, philosophy, and travel, as well as one of the finest selections of architecture and art books in the region.
