Playwright to Direct
(News Brief)

The Alley Theatre will venture on another co-production with the Cleveland Playhouse in Ken Ludwig’s world-premiere of Leading Ladies. The playwright, best known for his plays Crazy for You and Lend Me a Tenor, is set to direct the piece. Theatreport has just learned that Broadway musical theatre actor Brent Barrett will star in the production…

Barrett is noted for his work on Broadway in Annie Get Your Gun and Chicago. It is not yet clear which role he will play, but the premise revolves around two out of work Shakespearean actors reduced to performing in an Amish countryside. “Add a wealthy old woman searching for her two long-lost heirs. Then, mix in the beautiful niece who longs to be in the theatre and you have a rollicking new comedy of mistaken identities.”

In an interview with Playbill, Ludwig describes the two main roles as "sort of like Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon”. The playwright directed two stage readings of the piece in D.C. and is currently working on revisions of the script.

Leading Ladies will make its world premiere on October 15th in the Alley’s Hubbard Stage.
