BooTown Theatre presents the next installment of the River Bottom Series, a shadow puppet play called Death and a Rollercoaster.

In the late 90’s a small Texas town was shocked to find one of its own burning in a backyard. Those responsible rode rollercoasters in the summer heat as authorities searched. A young man quickly confessed but the surrounding events left a mark on the small community of friends.

The story of what happened and why inspired our latest production. The shadow puppet show will employ abstract visuals and audio to illustrate the stories surrounding the event.
“I spent hours in the Baytown library looking at microfiche to research the story,” says creator and BooTown’s co-artistic director..., Lindsay Burleson. “It’s one of those stories that goes unnoticed because it happened in a small town.”
Death and a Rollercoaster is the second installment of Burleson’s River Bottom Series. The first, River Bottom Rules, debuted in the 2012 season and chronicled life in a semi-no-man’s-land in east Texas through the eyes of a young girl.
“The series explores the often-overlooked lives of people from rural communities,” says Burleson. “The people in these places enjoy a different kind of independence because there aren’t many people around to judge them. Unlike those who live in the suburbs or urban towns, they exist in anonymity, allowed to be as weird, eccentric, kind or evil as they want to be.”
Joining Burleson in the building process will be Jade Young and Mauricio Menjivar as well as BooTown co-artistic director Emily Hynds. Kim Champion (Wombrot/Projectorphiles) will provide an original score for the production.
Death and a Rollercoaster opens January 2nd and runs through January 24 at various venues around town (see calendar below).
