HYPE (Houston Young Playwrights Exchange) is in its 8th consecutive year at the Alley Theatre. The program is designed to showcase local young playwrights in a professional theatrical setting for the public to enjoy. With the guidance of the Alley staff, the teens selected are able to workshop and further develop their scripts. The following plays have been selected for the summer staged reading... A Girl Like Mary by Megan Allison, age 18 A down-and-out shoe salesman must relinquish his relationship with Mary Tyler Moore when he meets the real woman of his dreams.
And So The Path Goes by Elissa Duncan, age 18 A hard-of-hearing teenager struggles to fit in at home and at school.
The Days of Awe by Kristen Wright, age 14 The Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur provides the background for a teen's explorations of life and faith.
The Eddy by Gary Suderman, age 17 A son gains a new appreciation for his dying father, and himself.
Pancakes and Orange Juice with My Demon by Philomena Salem, age 17 Everyone needs a friend. But what exactly is a friend?
In Retrospect by Mark Robbins, age 19 An explosive family situation turns deadly, but who is the killer?
