Be My Baby
WORLD PREMIERE COMEDY
By Ken Ludwig
Directed by John Rando
Hubbard Stage
September 30 - October 23, 2005
Bottles, diapers and bibs, oh my! Ken Ludwig's new comedy Be My Baby features Dixie Carter, often remembered as Julia Sugarbaker of the long-running television hit Designing Women and Hal Holbrook, the Oscar-nominated actor who played Deep Throat in All the President's Men and is currently appearing on Broadway to critical and audience raves with his one man show Mark Twain Tonight!. The veteran actors play two likeable characters who actually don't like each other very much, but are forced into a cross-Atlantic adventure to transport a newborn baby to her adoptive parents. Be My Baby is the latest from the author of Broadway's Lend Me A Tenor, Crazy for You and Leading Ladies, which premiered at the Alley last season. To be directed by John Rando, Tony Award-winner (Urinetown, The Dinner Party) and Houstonian. Sponsored by Enbridge Energy Company.

TBD
The second Neuhaus Stage production will be announced at a later date.

Born Yesterday
By Garson Kanin
Directed by Gregory Boyd
Hubbard Stage
February 24 - March 19, 2006
In the great American comedy, Billie Dawn is the bombshell ex-chorus girl whose junk-dealer millionaire boyfriend decides she needs a lesson in culture. When he hires a respected young journalist to teach her, Billie learns a whole lot more than the basics of literature, history and politics -- and love becomes the new subject to study. This famous 1946 romantic comedy enjoyed one of the longest runs in Broadway history and boasts a deliciously witty script filled with political overtones and an entertaining battle between brains and brawn.

Orson's Shadow
By Austin Pendleton
Directed by David Cromer
Neuhaus Stage
March 31 - April 30, 2006
Orson Welles, Laurence Olivier, and Vivien Leigh come to life in this clever comedy that reimagines the backstage drama that accompanied a 1960 production of Ionesco's Rhinoceros. A fictional account of events, Orson's Shadow uses humor and irony to reveal the fragility and vulnerability of these larger-than-life celebrities whose tangled romance (between Olivier, Joan Plowright, and Olivier's wife Vivien Leigh) and fleeting fame lead to a hilarious and powerful clash of the titans. Charles Isherwood of The New York Times writes, "Austin Pendleton's delightful backstage comedy is a sharp-witted but tenderhearted examination of the thin skins, inflamed nerves, and rampaging egos that are customary side effects when artistic talent meets worldly achievement."

The Miser
Written by Molière
Adapted by David Ball
In association with Theatre de la Jeune Lune
Hubbard Stage
April 7 - April 30, 2006
One of the greatest farces in classic dramatic literature, Molière's The Miser uses sharp wit and biting satire to draw audiences into the world of the tyrannical Harpagon, a ruthless, self-absorbed patriarch, perfectly willing to sacrifice his children for greed. When Harpagon's plans to marry off his children are thwarted by their own love interests, a comedic chaos ensues, filled with lovers, vows, hidden treasure, and mistaken identities. The well-known French comedy gets a new production at the Alley Theatre by Theatre de la Jeune Lune of Minneapolis, winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre. According to the Boston Globe, Theatre de la Jeune Lune's production of The Miser "has such grace and wit that it's churlish to be miserly with one's praise."

Agatha Christie's
Witness for the Prosecution

Directed by Gregory Boyd
Hubbard Stage
May 12 - June 4, 2006
Young and charming Leonard Vole spends many evenings with a rich middle-aged woman. When she is found murdered, the naive Leonard is the chief suspect. Though the case proves irresistible for veteran defense lawyer Sir Wilfred Robarts, the trial takes a turn when unexpected evidence is revealed. Agatha Christie's Witness for the Prosecution "packs plenty of surprise in its cargo of suspense"(Daily Mirror), making it one of the greatest courtroom dramas ever written.
