One of Americas greatest playwrights....

Eugene O'Neill

Regarded by many as one of Americas greatest playwrights Eugene spent his early years as a merchant seaman and drifter on the waterfronts of such locals as New York, Liverpool and Buenos Aires. He is known for explorations into the darker aspects of the human condition.

His best known plays include The Emperor Jones, Desire Under the Elms (1924), Mourning Becomes Electra (1931), and The Iceman Cometh (1946). He received the Pulitzer Prize in 1920 for Beyond the Horizon and received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1936, making him the first US dramatist to do so. His autobiographical, Long Day's Journey into Night was published in 1956*, and has long been regarded as one of americas finest plays.

He was considered one of Americas earliest "realist" playwrights but at one time opted for more expressionistic plays as influenced by the likes of Nietzsche, Freud, and Jung as well as swedish playwright [c]August Strindberg[/b]. He would later return to realism as he explored his own experiences within stories and themes that he is most regarded for.

He would go on to win a Pulitzer for Long Days... though the play was published posthumously and not seen until 1957.
