Unity Theatre Executive Director Teresa Beckers has announced a new five-play series for the Main Stage, as well as several smaller projects and concerts. The diverse new season includes two musicals and a classic Neil Simon play, but it also promises a Tony Award-winning drama and a comic romp with Shakespeare...
“Choosing a season of plays is always challenging,” says Beckers, “because we want a variety of great plays that will both surprise our regular audience and attract new theatergoers. Our 2005-2006 Season has something for everyone, and promises exciting challenges for our actors, directors, and designers.”
Opening at the top of the season will be The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged), directed by Resident Artist John Corley and featuring Brandon Clarke, Josh Morrison, and Lisa Thomas. This bodacious comedy was produced by the company in 1996 and audiences have been clamoring for its return ever since.
December will see the opening of a second Main Stage play suitable for the whole family and recommended as a joyful celebration of the holiday season. Directed by co-founder and Executive Director Teresa Beckers, The Christmas Schooner will star Resident Artists Carolyn Johnson, Jim Johnson, and Jamie Ward, with music direction by Michael Harren. This critically acclaimed musical tells the true story of a Michigan shipping captain who braves the deadly winter weather to bring Christmas trees to homesick German American families in turn-of-the-century Chicago.
In 2006 Unity Theatre will offer the perfect Valentine with its production of the award-winning Jones and Schmidt musical I Do! I Do!, directed and choreographed by Resident Artist Chesley Santoro Krohn. This all-time favorite begins in 1898 and traces the life of one marriage over a period of 50 years—all lovingly to the strains of a tuneful, charming score which includes the famous “My Cup Runneth Over.”
In March of 2006, Unity Theatre will bring The Heiress to the main stage. Suggested by Henry James' novel Washington Square, this haunting drama has been produced twice on Broadway. It will be directed by Resident Artist Kate Pogue, starring Joel Sandel, Charles Sanders, and (in the title role) Lisa Thomas.
Main Stage offerings will stretch into June this year with a production of Neil Simon’s most popular play, The Odd Couple. Our friends Felix Unger and Oscar Madison will be played by Resident Artists Greg Wise and Josh Morrison (respectively) and the show will be under the direction of George Brock, who most recently directed Unity Theatre’s highly successful The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
“Subscription is the way to go!,” Beckers proclaims. “You not only get 15% off the price of tickets, but you receive priority seating and special notices of all extra events.” Special Events will include a three-person studio production called “Cyrano” and a January concert by pianist Rick Rowley. Other events will be announced later in the season.
The season opens on September 8th with a preview of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged). For subscription prices and information, drop by the Unity Theatre Box Office at 300 Church Street, Brenham, or call 979-830-8358.
