Katy Visual Performing Arts Center proudly invites you to audition for their highly anticipated production of Reefer Madness the Musical, from the team that brought you last year’s smash hit Evil Dead the Musical!

Director: Jason Howard
Music Director: India Murphy
Choreographer: Eve Tidwell

Book by: Kevin Murphy & Dan Studney, Music by: Dan Studney, Lyrics by: Kevin Murphy
Produced by Special Arrangement with: R & H Theatrical

All roles are available and some (not all) will require being scantily clad/half-clothed on stage at various times. All roles are unpaid, volunteer positions.

Audition Dates & Times:
July 17 – 18, 2017, beginning @ 7:00pm (by appointment only)
Callbacks: July 19, 2017 @ 7:00pm

Location:
Katy Visual & Performing Arts Center (KVPAC Main Campus)
2501 S. Mason Rd, Suite 290
Katy, TX 77450

Performance Dates:
September 29, 30 & October 1, 2017

*** To schedule an audition, please email the director at ***

Audition Requirements:
Please prepare 2 contrasting, contemporary musical theatre songs of 16 – 32 bars each, preferably in a similar style to the show (songs FROM the show are allowed, but not recommended). An accompanist will be provided. No a capella auditions. Ideally, at least one song displays your comedic acting ability. Monologues are optional – it’s your chance to show us what you got! At callbacks, we will do cold reads from the script, songs from the show, and a dance routine (so, come dressed accordingly - accordingly is all the rage anyway).

Show Description:
Inspired by the original 1936 film of the same name, this raucous musical comedy takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids fall prey to marijuana, leading them on a hysterical downward spiral filled with evil jazz music, sex and violence. You won't be able to resist the spoofy fun of REEFER MADNESS. The addictive and clever musical numbers range from big Broadway-style showstoppers to swing tunes like 'Down at the Ol' Five and Dime' and the Vegas-style 'Listen to Jesus, Jimmy,' featuring J.C. Himself leading a chorus of showgirl angels. This dynamic show will go straight to your head! REEFER MADNESS is a highly stylized and satirical political commentary. It contains adult humor, religious parody, and drug use, as well as suggested violence and sexual explicitness. It therefore may be inappropriate for younger performers and audiences.

Character Breakdown:

Ages and descriptions are merely a suggestion and starting point – don’t be afraid to audition if you don’t feel you match. I enjoy casting creatively. Some roles may or may not be doubled, at the director’s discretion. The ensemble will have plenty of opportunities to take on additional roles not listed and shine!

Lecturer - M, 25-45, A severe authority figure who warns the audience of the perils of Reefer. Perhaps has a personal vendetta against this vile weed. Plays other various roles throughout.

Jimmy Harper - M, 18-22, A wholesome, innocent, high school teenager who runs into trouble after he is lured into the dangerous world of reefer. Loves Mary Lane. Needs to be comfortable appearing on stage half-dressed.

Mary Lane - F, 18-22, Jimmy’s sweetheart, a naive, virginal teenage girl, who may ultimately prove to not be nearly as innocent as she seems. Loves Jimmy Harper right back. Needs to be comfortable appearing on stage half-dressed.

Jack Stone - M, 30-45, The handsome, charming, and ruthless proprietor of the Reefer Dern, a 30’s gangster movie-type.

Jesus – appears to Jimmy in a vision a couple of times throughout the show. Smooth, cocky, and sings like Neil Diamond. A real showman.

Mae - F, 30-45, An attractive, yet slightly worse-for-wear dame, the hostess of the Reefer Den. Straight out of a Douglas Sirk film. Many regrets in life and has a kind heart.

Ralph Wiley - M, 25-35, A denizen of the Reefer Den, formally a fraternity man, his college days ended long ago due to his reefer habit.

Sally - F, 25-35, A sexy and seductive resident of the Reefer Den, she possesses the libidinous soul of Mae West combined with the rat-a-tat moxie of vintage Barbara Stanwyck.

Ensemble: M, F, 18-30, Mixed group to represent Reefer Zombies, Kids at the Five and Dime, Reefer Orgy dancers, Angels, Patriotic chorus in the Star-spangled finale, and many others throughout

PERFORMANCES

THE FOREIGNER runs 3 weekends, Sept. 1-17th
with two weekday evening performances, Thursday, Sept. 7th and Tuesday, Sept. 12

SYNOPSIS & CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

An inventive comic romp, The Foreigner is set in a fishing lodge in rural Georgia and tells the story of a pathologically shy young man named Charlie who pretends that he can’t speak English in order to avoid making conversation with strangers. Eventually the other guests decide to air their secrets around Charlie – many damaging revelations made - with the thought that Charlie doesn’t understand a word being said. That he does fuels the nonstop hilarity of the play and sets up the wildly funny climax in which things go uproariously awry for the “bad guys,” and the “good guys” emerge triumphant.

Froggy Lesueur: A British military demolitions expert who occasionally conducts field operations in rural Georgia, Froggy is Charlie's caring friend and devises the scheme that protects Charlie from having to interact with the other guests at the lodge.

Charlie Baker: A science-fiction copy editor for a book publishing house, Charlie is in his late forties, British, and is a pathologically shy little man who has a very unfaithful wife, no personality that he can think of, and a need for peace and quiet. He has accompanied his friend, Froggy to a Georgia fishing lodge much against his own better judgment.

Betty Meeks: The proprietor of a Georgia fishing lodge, Betty is past seventy, a widow, and a long-time friend of Froggy. She is pleasant, wise in some ways, naïve in others. She is a good-hearted, generous, “down-home” Southerner who speaks the hardy local dialect.

Reverend David Marshall Lee: Neither the stereotypical pallid young divinity student nor the hearty backslapping evangelist, he appears to be a regular guy, one that you would like to have on your side. He is not what he seems, however, and he is clearly the brains behind the plot he engages in with Owen Musser to get control of Betty Meeks's fishing lodge and Catherine Simms's fortune.

Catherine Simms: The very pregnant and potentially rich fiancée of the Reverend Lee, she can be a formidable force and occasionally almost too much for the good reverend to handle. She has a ready wit and a sharp tongue. She badly needs someone to talk to, and, since Charlie doesn't bother giving advice, he suits her needs perfectly. Catherine is Ellard's sister.

Owen Musser: The Tilghman County property inspector, Owen is a two-tattoo man: one of them, he may have gotten while drunk or on a dare; two of them means he went back for more. Beware of a two-tattoo man. Owen and the Reverend Lee are cooking up a plot to condemn Betty's lodge so that it can be bought for their own nefarious purposes. Owen, we find, is the absolute stereotype of an ill-bred southern Klansman.

Ellard Simms: Catherine's brother, Ellard is an agreeable young man who is a bit slow-witted. He works as a sort of handyman for Betty and needs a considerable bit of instruction in his tasks, but may not be as dull as he seems. He is due to inherit a share of the Simms family fortune, unless the Reverend Lee can convince Catherine that Ellard is too stupid to manage money, or anything else, on his own. Ellard befriends Charlie and even decides to teach him to speak English.

All roles are open and new faces are encouraged to audition.
