A Lesson Before Dying
by Ernest J. Gaines

January 20 - February 5, 2012

Great drama has the ability to embody social ideas in a compelling narrative that possesses both emotional and intellectual power. Ernest J. Gaines' A Lesson Before Dying, required reading in many high schools, offers an inspirational story of institutional injustice and personal redemption. Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) production of Romulus Linney's stage adaptation of Gaines' novel is guaranteed to stir the emotions and touch your heart.

A Lesson Before Dying, directed by Lisa Garza, HFAC Assistant Artistic Director, opens Friday, January 20 and runs weekends through February 5 at the HFAC Garza Main Stage Theatre.

Adapted closely from the Pulitzer Prize-nominated novel, A Lesson Before Dying is set in 1948 rural Louisiana and tells the story of two young men, both trying to break free of the chains that society has placed on them. This uniquely theatrical interpretation by Linney focuses on the struggles of the poor and oppressed to try and gain pride and dignity within a hostile and racist environment.
